About Us
The binge-eat.com site was created to provide online information from reputable scientific studies, reported by the online media, about binge-eating, which is one of the fastest-growing weight-related eating disorders.
It was created for personal and professional reasons, out of a sense of love and service. At the personal level, I started binge-eating decades ago, around the age of eleven, and my journey of recovery has been a long and untidy process, since binge-eating is quite complex, especially when it develops in childhood. Decades ago, the concept of being unable to control one's eating simply did not exist in the public imagination – and to a large extent, a judgemental attitude still prevails. Public condemnation and misunderstanding of the behaviour and symptoms (including overweight, obesity, bulimia and anorexia) tends to be severe and sensationalized. However, over the last few decades, science has been catching up to the reality that exists for thousands of people.
As a professional psychotherapist who specializes in treating clients with eating disorders (especially those with a strong binge-eating component), I became interested in the growing body of scientific information currently available online, and began saving web links. I soon realized that this compilation of links might be beneficial to others. The site is intended to inform those who seek help, and those who provide it – i.e., people in the wellness community who deal with the physical body (such as family physicians, nurse practitioners, nutritionists, dieticians, naturopaths, homeopaths, chiropractors, and massage therapists) and those who focus more on psychological/emotional concerns. In short, the site is for anyone likely to encounter someone who binge-eats.
Binge-eat.com is sponsored by www.changehappens.ca, which uses a holistic approach to treat binge-eating, focusing on the awareness of body, mind, emotions, and spirit.
